Cationic Polyacrylamide (CPAM)
Basic Information
Name: Cationic Polyacrylamide
Other names: CPAM; polyacrylamide (PAM); cationic flocculant Molecular formula: (C₃H₅NO)n copolymerized with cationic monomer Molecular weight: Polymer (several million to tens of millions dalton) CAS number: 9003-05-8
Ionic types: Polyacrylamide is classified by ionic character into cationic (CPAM), anionic (APAM) and nonionic (NPAM) types. This document focuses on the cationic type while also covering the anionic type.

2.Physical and Chemical Properties
- Appearance: White powder or granules
- Solubility: Soluble in water (forms viscous solution)
- Molecular weight: Several million to tens of millions dalton
- Ionic character: Cationic (positive charge) or anionic (negative charge)
- Stability: Stable; hygroscopic
3.Main Functions and Applications (What are its uses?)
- Sludge dewatering (cationic type, core application): CPAM is the first-choice flocculant for sludge dewatering. Through charge neutralization and bridging, it rapidly flocculates and dewaters sludge, and is widely used in municipal sewage plants, papermaking and chemical sludge treatment.
- Industrial wastewater treatment (anionic type, core application): APAM is used for flocculation and clarification of mineral processing, metallurgical and coal-washing wastewater, accelerating the settling of suspended solids.
- Papermaking retention and drainage: Both cationic and anionic PAM serve as retention and drainage aids, improving the retention of fine fibers and fillers.
- Oilfield: APAM is used as an oil-displacing agent, drilling-fluid viscosifier and fracturing-fluid friction reducer.
- Drinking water treatment (anionic type): APAM meeting sanitary standards is used for drinking water flocculation.
- How to choose between the two types: The cationic type suits negatively charged sludge and colloids, while the anionic type suits positively charged inorganic particle systems; the choice depends on the charge characteristics of the water.
